Rae Barney dares you to sculpt your dreams
Artist and SDFAS Mentor Program participant Rae Barney has announced
the opening of Fire and Mud Studios in Escondido, where she is teaching
clay workshops starting December 1, 2009. SDFAS applauds her hard work
and bravery as she finds and shares her bliss.
She studied raku, saggar, and pit fire techniques under Rico Piper,
renowned potter and raku master. She studied sculpture and three
dimensional design under sculptor Dick Marcusen.
"Sculpture is my passion. As I strive for the most effective way to
express my vision, I am continually pushin the limits of my media. As a
result, I am continually broadening the realm of possibility. Life is

Techniques you can explore:
Raku Firing - Raku is a firing technique founded in Japan and once used in making ceremonial tea cups. Since, artists have modernized this slam dunk form of firing clay to produce striking pieces of art. This style of firing can produce a rainbow of iridescent and metallic lusters, classic white crackle with black carbon highlights, or satin color flashes. Instant gratification with amazing and spectacular results.
Sagar Firing - This firing technique uses no glazes. Here we use a wide array of media, including salt, to "flash" color onto the piece during the firing. Results range from light earthy tones to black shiny flashes. Where Raku is flashy, Sagar is warm and earthy.
Horse Hair primitive firing - This techniques is best achieved on a white clay body and like the Sagar firing, uses no glaze. It involves the use of horse hair and feathers to decorate your piece. When laid upon the hot pot, the media smokes the piece and produces beautiful designs. Usually black on white.
