SDFAS on KUSI's "Good Morning San Diego"
Publicitiy is good! Yesterday morning between 7am and 9am four artists and myself were interviewed on "Good Morning San Diego". The artists, John McDavid ("Stormy Weather"), Kathryn Weiss ("Sofia"), Lia Strell ("Triflow of Truth"), and James Stone ("Tree Under the Sea") all got a few minutes each to talk about themselves and their work.
James Stone shined with his poise and eloquence (and received an offer to be on T.V. again - from his hot glass studio at Bernardo Winery!). John McDavid discussed the timelessness of hand-forging steel to create his very contemporary and powerful sculpture "Stormy Weather". Lia Strell shared the symbolism of her piece, "Triflow": the flower-like "fertile bloom" combines the masculinity of steel with the feminity of curving lines, and in the center the shared "spark of creativity" represented by the rose quartz stamen. Kathryn Weiss, the artist who did the magnificent mosaic work on the collaborative work "Sofia", shared some of the stories behind the individual passages in the sculpture. It was fascinating to hear Kathryn discuss the process of combining shards of memory and meaning to make make the piece, such as handmade tiles, a broken teacup from friend who passed away, the syncronicity of needing a dark glass element for the "night" side of the sculpture and having a friend give give her beautiful deep-blue streaked glass pieces from his boat, and learning that she began the process with a palm tree at the sculptures "sunny-side" core. It reminded me of the love and intent behind family quilts.
It was a beautiful morning and we are grateful to KUSI for sharing the exhibition at Quail Botanical Gardens with viewers throughout San Diego. Thank you KUSI!
