Art is life, it is beauty, it is emotion, it is you, it is me, it is everything. Art defines all that we are, and all that we could become. Art is of the past and of the future, of the influences of our daily lives, of our pasts combined with who we are today. Art is an indescribable joy, an expansion of the mind, body and soul. We are art, every last individual of the human race. Art comes in the form of music, dance, theater, painting, drawing, blowing, throwing, and even in the math equations or scientific experiments of the right brained population. Art is feeling, seeing, smelling, tasting and hearing. Art is here to titillate our senses, to create emotional and physical reactions to the viewer. Art is healing. Art is loving. Art is… everything.
I stand atop a rolling hill in California to observe the scene nature has put before me, I spread my arms wide, take a deep breath and fill my lungs with the freshest air I can find, I scream at the top of my lungs and smile the biggest smile when I open my eyes and find the beauty of the world before me, and I begin to shoot it with my camera. I try to capture the beauty before me on an inch long piece of film, in hopes of sharing my moment with another. Because in the words of Christopher McCandless “Happiness is only real when shared.”
Art is appreciated by all, it’s not technique that matters, it is the result that pushes or pulls the viewer away. No matter the art a reaction comes from the experience of viewing somebody else’s soul laid out to be criticized. There was never a time in history in which someone didn’t try to share the beauties of the world that were witnessed, from cave paintings to the most intricately detailed paintings or photographs that focus on every last details. Art is an indescribable personal experience for both viewer and creator. Yet, the question will always exist, “What is art?” Why do we need words to describe and define every aspect of life? That is my question….
