Great
art has harmony, universal themes that transcend time and culture
- such as love, forgiveness, hope, jealousy, heartbreak – the
themes in this parable. Interpret it as a metaphor for something
in your life now on a personal level, on a social level, or on a
global level. San Diego-based artists were challenged to create a
work of art that reflects their true feelings and thoughts about
the meaning of this parable.

In
Christian tradition, during Lent, the Parable of the Return of the
Prodigal Son is typically read on the third Sunday. It is Christ'
most beloved parable, a parable of God's mercy and human mercy, as
relevant today as 2000 years ago. Artists through the centuries
have depicted various aspects of it for various reasons, as simply
a commission, or for cultural and personal reasons. Join the San
Diego Fine Art Society's Collectors Club and delve into images
from 15th Italian and Northern European Renaissance to to 20th
century Europe - from Colonial America to contemporary African,
Indian, and British images to illuminate how artists have
portrayed the parable across time and across cultures.

February 14: History of the Female Nude

An amusing and somewhat romantic topic for Valentine's Day. This
entertaining and enlightening lecture will be accompanied by slides to
illustrate how depictions of the female form reflected changing ideas
about women and their varying roles within western culture from
Renaissance times to the present.

Connoisseurship of Painting

Everything you always wanted to ask but didn't know to whom will be covered in
this fast-paced overview of the history of painting...

  • what makes a painting a work of art and not an illustration

  • why are some artists celebrated during their creative lifetimes, while
others struggle, only to be "rediscovered" and venerated
long after they have passed on

  • why do some paintings become iconic and represent entire movements, reigns, or time periods

  • how is studying the history of art relevant to being a collector in today's marketplace

Collecting Works on Paper

Bring in a drawing or a watercolor painting and enjoy this very interesting and valuable lecture...

  • unique works on paper - drawings and watercolors

  • the intrinsic value of the paper itself and its condition

  • multiple originals and the very complicated print market

Connoisseurship of Sculpture

  • defining bronze sculpture in terms of process, patina, and the value of
    multiple originals

  • found object sculpture, kinetic sculpture, welded metal sculpture and
ephemeral sculpture will all be discussed with the emphasis on
    collecting in these areas

Collecting Art from Non-Technological Cultures (focus: African Art)

  • learning about the art that appeals to you and how to go about assembling a
    collection

  • whenever the market exceeds the material available, fakes appear and African
art is no different from any other type of art for which there is
demand and very little authentic material is available

  • what makes a piece worth a fortune while a similar one goes for a
    pittance?

  • the five guidelines used by appraisers to determine value

September: Fakes, Frauds, and Forgeries

the most entertaining talk of all; decorative as well as fine arts will
be discussed -- furniture, porcelain, silver, and more in addition
    to painting, prints, and sculpture

November: Studio Tour
