"My work is a contemplation of opposing forces I see evidenced in my own existence—dark-light, stillness-movement, good-evil, life-death, young-old … What captivates me is not the opposition but the binary connection, the negotiation, the earthly eternal grey between opposites that we struggle with daily. I enjoy the relationship in the ever present NOW that keeps duality fluid and not so obviously unrelated. The NOW of indecision and possibility is the realm of my fascination and contemplation." - Carolyn Guerra

Suite of eight
Look for "Steeples" in the Bamboo Garden
$10,000 ($4,000 is tax deductible)
"Though I trained as a fine artist, my background in graphic design has had significant influence on the work that I create. The motivation to create art has always been justified by making the work have a purpose or function. Initially my work in clay was entirely functional tableware with the flat areas of the form acting as a canvas for my decorative and narrative designs. Most recently I have pursued forms that are not driven by specific utility, but I have given these ceramic totems purpose by inserting symbols and images so that they function as a new form of visual communication." -Christie Beniston

His creativity and integrity flow his work, which is an autobiographical exploration and celebration of life. Honest, vital, funny and rich, DJ Brelje is a sculptor to watch.

"Kelp Man is made up of an uninterrupted strand of kelp. The figure’s right foot is attached to a rock similar to how the real holdfast part of kelp is often attached to a rock. His left foot is missing to enhance the sculpture’s ephemeral and natural qualities. Some of my inspiration comes from growing up in San Diego where I enjoy spear fishing, diving for lobsters, snorkeling, and working for an independent lobster fisherman." -DJ Brelje

Fred Briscoe
"Ascent"
"Ascent"
Bronze
Approximately 5 feet tall
Look for "Ascent in the California Native Plants Garden
$10,000 ($4,000 is tax deductible)
Fred Briscoe's sculpture embodies the enjoyment of natural forms and energy captured and described in stone. Sometimes his sculpture seems bursting with metaphysical meaning, and other times they simply feel good, like they must have been as wholesome and theraputic to create as they are for us to enjoy. "Ascent" is a graceful form that appears "slow" and solid near the base but sweeps up and increases speed toward the top, where the sail or leaf-like shape scoops out its place in time. The beauty of Fred Briscoe's sculpture is that we bring our own meaning to the work, our own order out of chaos, and the peace and pleasure one feels doing it make his elegant abstractions irresistible.

Look for "Osprey" in the Australian Garden
$25,000 ($10,000 is tax deductible)
"The images of my work reflect my fascination with the mystery of relics and ancient artifacts, which is inherent in many of the pieces I create. The “Feminine Sacred” is also an integral theme recurrent in my work. I am captivated by humanity’s reverence for the divine female. The ruins and museums I visited in places such as Heraklion, the Parthenon, Turkey, Mexico, Asia, Egypt, Africa.... have been some of my strongest influences. The treasures found in archaeological digs have incredible stories to tell. I try to capture the feeling one gets when seeing an artifact, the reverence and spirituality invoked by such pieces. I play with the crossover of cultures, religions, ethnicities, beliefs, etc. to meld them into a harmonious piece, reflecting my desire for a harmonious world."
"Osprey" is a former Urban Tree.

"Tree under the Sea"
Steel, Copper, Mosaic and Glass
16’ x 8’ x 6’

Look for "Tree under the sea" across from the Main Lawn

$20,000 ($8,000 is tax deductible)

My art today, is the convergence of my experiences of living around water from my earliest years through out my adult life.  As a boy I was fascinated with the mysteries of underwater existence. The liquid crystal quality of water, (which resembles that of glass) and the never-ending study of the strange and wonderful creatures that lived with in it became a life long passion. Creating illusions of underwater environments in glass, copper and steel, infuses the work with the life-force energy of fire and forge. It’s my hope that as the viewer becomes lost in the sight, sound and feel of the work, they become gently charged with that same life-force energy, while still experiencing the peaceful relaxing sense of visiting a strange and wonderful underwater world. -James Stone

Terry allows the shape of the wood to influence or dictate what he can do with it. He then transforms the volatile nature of the wood into abstract figures and designs.

Lia Strell is a native Southern California sculptor. Some might say her work is in the center between Art & Energy. She is compelled to move metal in a flowing way. 4' x 7'
Look for "Stormy Weather" in the Herb Garden
$20,000 ($8,000 is tax deductible)
John McDavid has traveled extensively and has lived in many places but has now settled in San Diego and has made a living for the last 6 years as a custom metal designer and sculptor. His vision is to accomplish a timeless style using classic materials and craftsmanship that people will enjoy on all levels. The ancient art of hand-forged metalsmithing brings a fluid style to McDavid's work not often seen in modern design. Capturing movement in the moment and using negative space as a new way of looking at his subjects he finds inspiration in nature, music, world art, and by collaboration with artist friends. He has established an eclectic style ranging from organic surrealism to the clean lines of today’s New Century Modern movement. "Stormy Weather", McDavid's masterpiece, is made of forged steel: each branch is the result of over a thousand hits with a hammer. Hundreds of hours of work and thought to create the elegant grace and strength of this windswept tree.
