2024-2025 Extracurricular Activities Descriptions

Monday

Parkour Program at San Diego French American School with Rogue Parkour Gym: Are you looking for an after-school program that combines physical fitness, mental agility, and a whole lot of fun? Do you want your child to learn how to move with confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and build resilience? If so, join Coach Greg from Rogue Parkour Gym for an exciting and dynamic after-school parkour class! This class is designed to introduce students to the world of parkour, focusing on various components that make this discipline both challenging and fun.

Originating in the streets of Paris, France, parkour is a discipline deeply rooted in French culture. Developed by a group of French athletes in the late 1980s, parkour emphasizes efficient and fluid movement through urban environments. This art of movement has since evolved into a global phenomenon, inspiring individuals to push their physical and mental boundaries. Students will explore the fundamentals of parkour, including agility, strength, balance, and creativity, through structured drills and obstacle courses. Each session will cover different aspects of parkour, from precision jumps, wall climbs and vaults to speed runs and flow techniques, ensuring a well-rounded experience. We understand that every parent wants their child to grow not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally. That’s why our program is about more than just jumping and running—it’s about helping your child develop risk assessment skills, discipline, and the ability to think on their feet.

Our classes are structured to provide a safe environment where students can challenge themselves, learn from their mistakes, and celebrate their successes. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced traceur aiming to refine your skills, this after-school program offers something for everyone.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to train with one of the best! Sign up today and start your parkour journey with Rogue Parkour Gym.

This class aims to teach the basics and perfect ping pong. Technique, tactics and mental skills are covered, and several tournaments will be held during the year to put these skills to good use.

SDFAS Drone Team is open to all 4th through 8th grade students! This exciting program offers students the opportunity to explore the cutting-edge world of drone technology while building critical skills in coding, piloting, teamwork, and communication. As part of the SDFAS Drone Team, students will: Learn to pilot and program Robolink Codrone EDU drones using both block-based and Python coding. Collaborate to solve real-world challenges by designing innovative solutions. Develop leadership, presentation, and teamwork skills in a dynamic, hands-on environment. This year’s goal is to represent SDFAS in the REC Aerial Drone Competition!

Throughout the year, we will train and compete in local and, hopefully, regional events. With dedication and teamwork, we could even host our own competition in the SDFAS Auditorium! The theme for this year’s competition is yet to be revealed, but last year’s thrilling “Eclipse” challenge showed how students can apply their technical and creative talents to aerial missions. Whether you’re into tech, problem-solving, or just want to try something new and exciting, the SDFAS Drone Team is the place for you! Spots are limited, so sign up today and soar to new heights with the SDFAS Drone Team!

Glee Choir is a program specifically catered to our talented young singer/dancers. Participants in this program learn how to sing beginner harmonies with good breath support and work on HOW to achieve all this while dancing to some show-stopping “choralography”. You can even audition for a solo! Music is provided and the class will culminate with a recital for family, friends, and community members.

This is a beginner/intermediate watercolor class that focuses on techniques specifically when painting a variety of flowers, leaves, and fruit. Explore how detailed and fluid watercolor can be, with techniques like wet on wet, masking, lifting, color blends, and salt sprinkles! Students will paint directly from life using perspective and paint outside in nature on the school campus. At the end of the semester we will have an art show to show off all of their hard work.

Tuesday

Children with no experience will learn the basics of skateboarding: using the right gear, putting on safety pads, learning how to fall on their pads, learning how to stand on a skateboard, rolling on the skateboard, learning how to turn, and how to push on the board by themselves.

Children with some experience experience skateboarding but still need some assistance, they will learn how to properly push on a skateboard, go faster, make turns, learn how to handle more speed, learn how to foot break, control, they will attempt to go up and down on a ramp.

Children that already skate by themselves, push strong enough to go up and down a ramp by themselves. Kids here will practice and get better through a combination of a cone course and ramps.

They will learn how to ollie, go up and down on the ramps, kick turn, jump off the ramps, clear gaps, slide and learn a combination of skateboard tricks. The lessons will be designed according to the needs/skills of the group.

Level up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects. Projects are rotated seasonally to ensure that even returning students get a new experience, so join us to design and build as never before and explore your craziest ideas.

This is a call for all aspiring engineers, scientists, and innovators from 4th to 8th grade! Get ready to launch into an unforgettable adventure with the SDFAS Rocketry Team as we prepare for the 2025 American Rocketry Challenge! 🚀

What is this year’s challenge? Students will work in order to design and build a rocket that can carry two eggs (oriented sideways) safely to an altitude of 790 feet (as close as possible) and return to Earth in a precise time frame of 41 to 44 seconds.

Rules of the 2025 Challenge Skills You’ll Develop:

Mechanical Engineering: Design and construct a fully functional rocket, learning key principles of aerodynamics, propulsion, and stability.

Physics in Action: Apply your understanding of forces, motion, and gravity to make sure your rocket performs at its best.

Problem-Solving: Overcome real-world challenges as you test, iterate, and optimize your rocket for peak performance.

Teamwork & Communication: Collaborate with fellow teammates to brainstorm, design, and troubleshoot—just like real-world engineers.

Coding & Data Analysis: Use coding to collect and interpret flight data, enhancing the accuracy of your launches.

Precision & Safety: Ensure your rocket meets specific altitude and flight time goals, all while protecting your egg cargo from the forces of flight!

This program is perfect for students who love STEAM subjects and enjoy working on challenging, team-based projects. Along the way, you’ll learn how to work like aerospace engineers and experience the thrill of launching a rocket! Ready for the endeavor? Join the SDFAS Rocketry Team today and reach for the stars—one launch at a time! ✨

The Middle School Theater Club is an exciting extracurricular activity where students can explore the world of theater and drama. Taught entirely in French, by Stéphanie Labbé, this club offers a unique opportunity for students to improve their language skills while engaging in creative and expressive activities.

In the Theater Club, students will: Develop Acting Skills: Through various exercises and activities, students will learn the fundamentals of acting, including voice modulation, body language, and emotional expression. Since all instructions and performances are in French, students will naturally improve their French vocabulary, comprehension, and speaking abilities.

It’s a fun and engaging way to practice French outside the traditional classroom setting. Collaborate and Create: Theater is a team effort! Students will work together to create and perform scenes, fostering a sense of community and teamwork.

We hope to present 2 shows, one in December maybe and one in May. These performances are a fantastic opportunity for parents to see their children’s progress and enjoy a delightful show! Performing in front of an audience helps students build self-confidence. Appreciate French Culture: Many of the plays and scenes performed are from French literature, giving students a deeper appreciation of Francophone culture.

Supportive Environment: Our club is a safe space where students can express themselves freely and support each other’s growth.

Cultural Exposure: Students get a chance to delve into French plays, stories, and traditions, enriching their cultural understanding. Join Us: We encourage all students who have an interest in theater, a passion for the French language, or simply a curiosity to try something new, to join our club. No prior acting experience is necessary—just a willingness to participate and have fun!
